from the Whitewood Herald, June 1909 - On Saturday word reached town of the sudden death of Mrs. H. Aitkins of Winnipeg, daughter of Mr and Mrs Dayman, residing just northeast of town. We have taken the following facts of the sad event from Saturday’s Winnipeg Free Press. “Mrs. Elizabeth Aitken, 34 years of age, wife of Harry Aitken, died very suddenly at her home on the corner of Lily St and Alexander Ave. shortly after 5 o’clock last evening. Coroner Inglis later expressed the opinion that heart disease was the cause of death and that the heat had probably aggravated the attack. Mrs. Aitken had been enjoying good health almost up to the time of her death. During the day she had been heard to complain of suffering from a headache but this was not sufficient to in any way interfere with her attention to her household duties. She was last seen alive by her daughter, Willa, twelve years old, about the hour named, seated at a sewing table. The child went out and when shereturned half an hour later, she found her mother leaning heavily against the table in an insensible condition. Thinking she had fainted, the child got some water and bathed her mother’s face. This being of no avail, she became alarmed and called Mrs. Arthur Aitkins, who lives nearby. The latter at once recognized that the case was serious and telephoned Dr. Ritchie who immediately responded. After a brief examination, the doctor pronounced Mrs. Aitkins dead.
Harry Aitkin went to Rossner in connection with the moving of a church. He was telephoned immediately. The station agent at Rossner, learning the facts, flagged the train and enabled Mr. Aitkins to reach the city at 10:30 that evening.
The deceased who had been married 14 years, leaves her husband and three children, the youngest about 2 years of age.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Lamont and the deceased’s brother and sister left for Winnipeg on the Saturday Evening Limited.”
