- in The Settlement of Huron County by James Scott, Kippen is described as located in southeast corner of township of Stanley, named after Kippen, Scotland in 1855; by 1900 was a thriving village with hotel, 2 stores, 2 blacksmiths, saw mill, tailor, carriage maker and 2 churches; in 1984 had post office, a few residents and a seed business
- 21 miles SE of Goderich, 10 miles SW of Seaforth
- adopted in March 1876 by Elam (Sr.) and Ann (Dayman) Butt after Elam (Jr.) claimed child was not his - agreement (now in possession of Bernice Peters) made between Elam (Sr.) and John McNaughton, father of Margaret, his mother
-left home at age 16 to work as carpenter in Goderich, Ontario
-worked for Grand Trunk Railway (CNR) for 30 years as brakeman - recorded in newspaper obituary - lost his job in 1930
-belonged to Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (listed as attending his funeral in Memorial Record)
- recorded in The Western Canadians 1600-1900 as CNR Conductor living in 1910 in Saskatoon
- did other jobs after that, including caretaker of RCMP office building
- met his wife Ida through her younger brother George and older brother William Henry (Uncle Boy)
-built 2 houses where family lived in Saskatoon (420 and 422 Ave. I South); built "blue box" and small blue child's chair that Bernice (Butt) Peters has
- he was the one who named all of his 7 daughters
- gravestone reads "Butt - Mother Ida Mary 1880-1957 Father Josiah 1876-1945 Son Grover H. 1913-1914 Daughter Lovina Ann 1905-1954 at rest at Biggar, Sask." "A beautiful memory lingers"
